Fillings in the shade of your own tooth

Fillings

A dental filling is the most common way of giving a tooth back its shape and function. Modern materials match the shade of the tooth.

When a tooth needs a filling

A filling restores the part of the tooth that needs to be replaced — whether it is a small surface or a more extensive build-up, the examination will show. The sooner the tooth is treated, the smaller the intervention needed and the more of your own tooth is preserved.

The aim of a filling is to replace the missing part of a tooth with a material that bonds firmly with the rest of the tooth and restores its original shape.

Types of filling

We most often use photocomposite materials, which can be matched to the natural shade of the tooth, and glass-ionomer materials, which have their place mainly in specific cases.

How the treatment works

  1. We examine the tooth and determine the extent of treatment, with an X-ray image if needed.
  2. We numb the area with a local anaesthetic.
  3. We prepare the tooth for the filling.
  4. We apply the filling material and cure it into the tooth's original shape.
  5. We adjust the bite and polish the filling.

Extent of the filling and number of surfaces

Both the price and the extent of treatment depend on how many tooth surfaces have to be replaced – that is, whether it is a single-surface, two-surface or larger filling, or a bigger build-up of the tooth.

Who the treatment suits

  • when restoring a tooth, on a smaller or a larger scale
  • when replacing an older or worn filling
  • as part of building a tooth up before a crown is fitted

Frequently asked questions

The treatment is carried out under local anaesthesia. Once it wears off, the tooth may be slightly more sensitive for a short time, which fades quickly.

How long a filling lasts depends on its size, the material and how the teeth are cared for. With good hygiene and regular check-ups a filling can last many years, though in time it may need replacing.

Photocomposite fillings can be matched to the colour of the tooth, and we use them mainly on visible as well as functional surfaces. We tend to choose glass-ionomer materials in specific cases instead, for example for fillings in the area of the tooth root.

A filling is replaced mainly when it is damaged, no longer seals, has changed colour or when the doctor recommends replacing it at a check-up. We check the state of fillings at every regular check-up.

The effect of a local anaesthetic usually wears off within a few hours of treatment. During that time it is better to avoid eating, so that you do not accidentally bite the numbed tissue.

We recommend waiting until the anaesthetic has worn off completely, so that you do not bite your cheek or lip. With some materials we recommend avoiding harder food on the first day after treatment.
